Optimize your system for Online Exam

To optimize your experience, we advise you to follow these guidelines:

1. Before taking the exam

Issue: How do I best prepare myself before taking an exam?

Solution: Review all syllabus readings and work all previous test questions associated with the articles on the various preparatory tests. Clear space on your desktop. Make sure you have sufficient space on your desktop to write out computations on scratch paper.

2. When to take an exam

Issue: The day and time you choose to take your exam may affect your exam taking experience. Internet traffic increases dramatically at various times during the week.

Solution: We suggest that you take an exam in the mornings or on the weekends. We also suggest that you take each exam from your workplace, as corporate Internet connections are more reliable and usually faster than home connections.

3. Choosing your browser

Issue: Online Exam works best when using Internet Explorer 6.  Although you may take an exam using other browsers or earlier versions of Internet Explorer, why would you when your exam experience will be optimized using IE 6?

Solution: We strongly recommend that you upgrade to Internet Explorer 6, which is a free download from Microsoft. Instructions on installing Internet Explorer are also accessible on that page.

4. Enable cookies

Issue: While browsing the internet, websites may place small files on your computer. These files are used to automatically log you in, store your personal preferences, or track your progress through the site. All 10 uses cookies to track your progress through an exam.

Solution: To enable cookies, see our Cookie Information Page.

5. Clear browser cache

Issue: While browsing the internet, the web browser saves all previously visited pages to your computer. When you visit a new site, the browser must search through the entire set of pages (called the cache) before it loads the site. When the cache becomes large, web browser performance decreases.

Solution: To remedy this situation, clear your browser's cache. See our Cache Information Page for further details.

6. Close open applications

Issue: Having multiple applications open at the same time can reduce system performance, reduce the responsiveness of a web browser, and thus affect your test taking. Also, open applications may distract you from the timed test environment.

Solution: Exit out of all of your open applications before beginning your online exam.

7. Defrag your hard drive

Issue: During the course of normal computer use, program files may become fragmented across your entire hard drive. This can affect your computer's speed by slowing down your applications.

Solution: To remedy this situation, run the Disk Defragmenter. To run defrag, click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter (shown below). Once the program opens, click Okay (in Windows 9x) or Defragment (in WinNT) to begin defragmenting.
